Debutant Simon Loughran leads Darren Bradley at the 2XU Surrey League at Lloyd Park The Croydon Harriers men's cross-country team after their victory at Lloyd Park. The senior men’s last grasp grab for promotion came to a climax on home icy turf at Lloyd Park. After a valiant effort from all concerned, Croydon (244) won the fixture by just two points from the in form Wimbledon Windmilers (246) and ten points from a resurgent Tadworth (254) outfit. But with things so tight at the top of the overall league standings we fell just short, and will have to come back guns blazing when the 2012/2013 season kicks off in October. League result (overall result in brackets, two to go up and two to go down) full results to follow 1 Croydon 244 (3: 1411) 2 Wimbledon Windmilers 246, (1: 878) 3 Tadworth 252 (2: 1311), 4 Sutton Runners 407(4: 1591) 5 West 4 Harriers 403 (5: 1972) 6 Elmbridge RRC 543 (6: 2063), 7 Runnymede Runners 624 (7: 2170) 8 Britsh Airways AC 672 (9 2613) 9 26.2 RRC 704 (8: 2371) PHOTO GALLERY Twenty men towed the start-line in a bid to return to the league’s second tier after an absence of five seasons. Such was the determination to gain promotion, 2nd claim members Steve Goss and Darren Bradley travelled especially from Bristol and Exeter respectively in a bid to boost our chances. 17 year-old Mark Plackett led from the front in dominating fashion winning the overall race, from non-scoring 16 year-old Peter Chambers (who despite finishing runner-up in the race is one year too young to count in the senior classifications). David White was also in close contention in fourth. The scoring ten was completed with Goss, Bradley, Sam Clayton, Jaran Finn, Colin Oxlade, Ian Wright , debutant Simon Loughran and Andy Del Nevo . We enjoyed a record turnout (our best in over a decade) on Saturday and we can certainly be very proud of our league efforts this year, after throwing the metaphorical kitchen sink at trying to go up! Invaluable non-scoring support came from David Brown, Matthew Kiernan, Neil Aikman, Rod Harrington, Leslie Muriziva, Keith Brown, debutant Mark Maginn, Norman Hemming and Eric Campbell . A great effort, regardless of the result. Well done all. Also thanks to Ben Savill, Mohsin Harhara, Dave Warren, Andy Simms, Alan Burn & Martin Rowe who have also competed in the league this season. CROYDON ADVERTISER REPORT also in CROYDON GUARDIAN and both hard copies. In the young athlete’s races, Kartik Iyer was agonisingly edged out in the final 50m of the 2.5 mile race and had to settle for runners-up spot. Omar Harhara made it four wins out of four league races, triumphing in the under-13 boy’s race. Harhara is also the star of this week’s Athletics Weekly on the back-page. Bertie and Angus Harrington made their Surrey league debuts and Josh Bukare was also in action. Special thank you’s to: Don Webb, Rob Elsworthy, CoLinda, Mandy Rowley-Jones, Lorraine Gomes, Kim Thornton, JP Lamarque, Keith Brown, Norman Hemming, Mohsin Harhara, Jayne Brackenborough, Isobel Harrington, Carol Munns, Mike & Nicola Fleet, Alan Burn & John Chambers – For all your invaluable assistance on the day. | |
