Lawrence crossed the line in fourth. Both performances may well put in them in contention for Surrey selection for March’s inter-counties in Birmingham. Cora Sexton was also in action in the same race in 22nd. In the under-13 girls, Josie Kavanagh (tenth) and Phillipa Hughes (22nd) flew the Croydon flag. The 17-strong Harriers did their chances no harm at all, with a great presence at the front of the field and good packing elsewhere. Peter Chambers imperiously won the 5-mile race in 27:48, but is too young to be eligible for the team standings so competed as a guest. In the 3rd division race itself, Croydon enjoyed a one-two with Mark Plackett (28:24) taking the spoils and David White (28:48) in runners-up spot. Jaran Finn (26th, 31:23) and Colin Oxlade (28th, 31.34) were also in contention, before Ben Savill (41st, 32:35) sneaked in front of Neil Aikman (42nd, 32:42) on the line. The ever reliable Martin Rowe (55th, 33:21) and a returning Ian Wright (55th, 33:21) followed in, and it was left to David Brown (63rd, 33:48) and Andy Del Nevo (64th, 33:48) to close the scoring ten home. The performance gives Croydon every chance going into the final fixture on the 11th February at Lloyd Park. Invaluable non-scoring support came from Keith Brown, Dave Warren, Norman Hemming, Mohsin Harhara and Eric Campbell . Sam Clayton was sadly forced to withdraw after suffering a hamstring injury. GARMIN VIEW OF THE RACE from the middle of the pack In the Young Athletes race, Josh Haasz took the spoils and won the 2.5 mile race by 25m from his nearest rival, in a performance which could nod towards the Surrey selectors after his seventh in the Surrey champs. Kartik Iyer grabbed fourth in his first outing of 2012, and Omar Harhara featured highly in the under-13 standings. With thanks to our supporters & helpers : Alan Burn, Julian Dillow, Josh Haasz, John & Carole Chambers, Mrs Aikman, Kim Thornton, Carole Munns and of course the legendary Linda Harrison .
